Elemental Magic: The Art of Special Effects Animation by Joseph Gilland (amazon) is great! It’s a book on hand drawn effects animation, something I’ve wanted for a long time. I can go on for pages about effects animation, instead I’ll sum it up as they are tedious and complicated but offer a freedom in animation and a reward that no other form of animation touches. I’m not done with the book, but each page so far is loaded with insight and technique. One of the most suprising things about this book is how Joseph Gilland has gone beyond the art of it to really figured these things out and then explains them so clearly. Really, if you’re an animator, want to be one, or are just interested in animation… buy this book.
